Curricular structure

MASTER'S DEGREE

To obtain a master's degree, the student must complete a minimum workload of 360 hours, pass the qualification exam and pass the public defense of the master's thesis.

24 credits (360 hours/class) are required, distributed as follows:

- compulsory subjects: 9 credits (3 subjects);

- elective subjects: 15 credits (5 subjects).

NOTE: Up to two elective subjects can be taken in other stricto sensu Postgraduate Programmes within UFRJ or outside it, to complement the subjects offered at the PPGAV or the dissertation research work.

In addition to meeting credit requirements, compulsory activities are:

- Submit the choice of the supervisor to the Deliberative Committee of the Programme, by the end of the first semester;

- Present the Dissertation Project for Qualification Exam, by the end of the second semester;

- Undergo the public dissertation defense until the end of the fourth semester.

The Master's course in Visual Arts lasts two years (24 months) and is structured on a full-time basis: the first three semesters are intended for the fulfillment of credits in subjects; the fourth semester is dedicated to the development of the dissertation.

At the end of the first year, the student must pass the Qualification Exam, which entitles him/her to enroll in Dissertation Research. The Qualification Exam consists of the presentation with argumentation of the final Dissertation Project and the initial draft of at least one chapter of the dissertation, in addition to a summary with comments. The Examining Board is composed of 3 professors from the Programme, or by two members of the Programme and an external examiner.

DEFESA DE DISSERTAÇÃO

DOCTORATE

To obtain the title of Doctor, the student must complete a minimum workload of 450 hours, pass the qualification examination and public defense of the doctoral thesis.

30 credits (450 hours/class) are required, distributed as follows:

- compulsory subjects: 18 credits (6 subjects);

- elective subjects: 12 credits (4 subjects).

NOTE: Up to four elective subjects can be taken in other stricto sensu Postgraduate Programmes within UFRJ or outside it, to complement the subjects offered at the PPGAV or the thesis research work.

In addition to meeting credit requirements, compulsory activities are:

- Submit the choice of the supervisor to the Deliberative Committee of the Programme, by the end of the first semester;

- Present the Thesis Project for Qualification Exam, by the end of the fourth semester;

- Undergo the public defense of the thesis, until the end of the eighth semester.

The doctoral course in Visual Arts lasts four years (48 months) and is structured on a full-time basis: the first two years are dedicated to the fulfillment of credits in subjects; the last two years are dedicated to the development of the thesis.

At the end of the second year, the student must pass the Qualification Exam, which entitles him/her to enroll in Thesis Research. The Qualification Exam consists of the presentation with arguing of the final Thesis Project and the initial draft of at least two chapters of the thesis, demonstrating: consistency and completeness in the theoretical framework of the thesis, indication of methodology and empirical guidance, when applicable. The Examining Board is composed of 3 professors from the Programme, or by two members of the Programme and an external examiner.
